Leverage beats
strength
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a system that focuses on grappling and particularly ground fighting. It uses natural body mechanics and leverage to obtain a dominant position or control on the ground, which in turn provides greater opportunity for striking or submissions.
BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker and less athletic person can successfully defend against a larger and stronger assailant. As such it is a very practical martial art for women.
It has been proven, when used properly, to be an effective method for dealing with bigger and stronger opponents — which is exactly why it became the foundation of modern MMA.
The kimono game
Grips, collars, sleeves and lapels. Slower, more technical, and the format your belt is graded in. We will lend you a gi for your first sessions.
Shorts and rashguard
Faster, sweatier, grip-free. Closer to wrestling and directly transferable to MMA. Both are taught every week — most members do both.
What a first BJJ
class looks like
No one is going to submit you on day one. Here is the actual shape of the session.
Warm-up
Movement drills on the mats — shrimping, bridging, breakfalls. You learn to move on the ground before you learn to fight there.
Technique
One or two positions broken down slowly, then drilled with a partner. Nobody is resisting. You are just learning the shape of it.
Positional work
Starting from a set position and working the problem with light resistance. This is where it starts to click.
Rolling — optional
Live sparring at the end. On your first night you are very welcome to sit and watch instead. Plenty do.
No-Gi
Especially good for women and smaller athletes
Because BJJ is built on the premise that leverage beats size, it is one of the few martial arts where being smaller is a solvable problem rather than a permanent disadvantage.
- Practical self defence from the position most real altercations end up in
- No striking, so no head trauma — you can train it hard for decades
- Kids jiu-jitsu runs five times a week for ages six and up

Before you start
No. This is the single most common thing people say before their first class, and the single most common thing they laugh about six weeks later. You get fit by training, not before it. Every drill is scaled and you can stop and breathe whenever you need to.
Not to start. We will lend you one for your first few sessions. Once you know you are sticking with it, we will point you at somewhere sensible to buy your own — you do not need an expensive one.
BJJ has no striking, which removes the main injury risk in combat sports. Submissions are applied slowly and you tap — a light double-tap on your partner — the moment anything feels uncomfortable. Everyone releases immediately. Tapping is a normal part of every session, including for the coaches.
Typically one to two years of consistent training. BJJ belts are famously slow compared with other martial arts, and that is deliberate — a blue belt here means you can genuinely handle yourself. Stripes along the way mark your progress.
Completely reasonable, and very common. Tell the coach before class and you will be partnered thoughtfully. Our members are used to training with people of every size and experience level, and the culture here does not tolerate anyone using strength to prove a point.
